Airlift Photobioreactor
The Phyco-Lift range of photobioreactors provides a robust laboratory or pilot sized solution to growing algae for commercial or research purposes (0.07 – 2.5 m3). The simple modular design allows for scale-up with negligible performance drop; and the reactor can be operated in either airlift or column mixing configurations, both of which allow for low shear, high turbulence and high mass transfer culturing conditions. The reactor can be equipment with the VAS AlgaeConnect control unit, and a range of sensor or lighting options to improve cultivation conditions. In 2004 NSG began a project which required the cultivation of green chlorella vulgaris algae to act as a non-radioactive simulant for organic material present at a storage pond at Sellafield. Although we have considerable experience in inorganic materials simulation, NSG had no experience of cultivating and harvesting living material. In addition to the BioFence system and ancillary equipment designed by and purchased from Varicon Aqua Solutions, the advice from Mr Joe McDonald throughout the project was invaluable in getting a successful outcome. I helped install and operate several of these systems for the US Fish and Wildlife Service for about 3 yrs. "We had good success in using the biofence system for growing a variety of micro algae over a 3 year period. We used the fences in an indoors installation with artificial lighting and controlled temperatures, and also outside using natural light and temperatures. In both inside & outside constellations the biofence produced good results in terms of algal growth and for producing good quality biomass the system works fine. We had not particularly expected the outside fence to do much (we were working in North Wales, not noted for high temperatures and good light), but in fact the results were great.
